Sand Creek’s David Jabedo’s free throws with 1.6 seconds remaining in regulation sealed the 61-59 victory for the Scorpions over the Sierra Stallions on Friday night. Jabedos free throws came after Sierra senior guard CJ Jennings hit the first of two free throws to tie the game at 59 with 7.3 seconds left. On the miss, Jabedo grabbed the rebound and raced down the court only to get fouled and put on the line. In a game that saw multiple lead changes, this was a battle from the beginning.

The Stallions would race to a 10-2 lead to start the game which included back to back threes by Jennings prompting Sand Creek to call a timeout at the 4:30 mark. After the break the Scorpions would go on a 12-4 run to end the quarter, knotting the score up at 14 after one. The game would no longer see a lead greater than single digits as each team would trade baskets throughout the contest.

Sand Creeks Jabedo and Jeffrey Gary carried Sand Creek through the second quarter scoring 8 and 6 points each to help Sand Creek to a 33-31 lead at the half. Both teams struggled in to get baskets to drop in the third. With jumpers not falling, Sand Creeks D’Shawn Schwartz took matters into his own hands and drove the baseline for a dunk. The quarter ended with Sierra’s Stephan Deedon dribbling through the Sand Creek defense for a layup to giving the Stallions a 41-39 lead after three.

Sand Creek would start the fourth with a steal and a dunk by Tyler Durham to tie the game at 41. Sierra’s Dondre Savage came up with key rebounds and buckets as the senior scored 6 of his 15 points in the fourth quarter. The difference in the outcome would be free throws. Sand Creek hit 8 of their 11 free throws while Sierra shot 6 for 11 from the line in the fourth quarter. The Scorpions hit 18 of 29 free throws for the game while the Stallions made 14 0f 28 from the charity stripe.

Schwartz led Sand Creek with 20 points, with Gary pitching in 17 and Jabedo with 12.  Sierra was led by CJ Jennings with 21 points and  Savage added 15.
