George Washington vs Montbello Game Notes

Let’s be honest for second, it wasn’t that long ago when George vs Bello, at the Thunderdome, was the place to be on a late January Saturday afternoon.  The pageantry of the game may not have been what it used to have been but the play on the floor was still there.

George looked and played like the Patriot team we expected to see this year. Talented guards passing to the open man, attacking the paint, and knocking down three’s. Defensively they were active and not passive, creating a number of deflections into turnovers leading to transition baskets.

Despite how well George played they could never really put away the Warriors. George  was in control most of the way but they did allow Montbello to cut the lead to five points a couple of times in the second half. Montbello has length on defense and when they have their rotations  down they are hard to score on.

Jon’il Fugett a sophomore guard for George pretty much scored at will and had his best game of the season so far.  Connecting on 3’s or slashing to the basket he was near unguardable.

Daylen Kountz was also shot the ball well knocking down mid rage jumpers.

Manel Ayol a 6’6 senior had a very good first half for Montbello. Ayol was one of the few Warriors that could finish consistently at the basket and was hard to handle in the paint.

George’s experience was a big factor in this game as well. George’s crew of  Kountz, Green and the Fugett brothers have been starting together for two years now. Montbello did not have that type of consistency returning this year but they do have underclassmen like Nelson, Sindou Cisse, and Tom gaining valuable experience.
