Denver, CO –This is huge for us; it’s a big win for DSST.” Denver Science and Technology Head Coach Wondame Davis said after his Knights defeated Lutheran 72-64 in an early season thriller Friday night.  The tiny gym was sold out and had an electric atmosphere with neither team leading by more than eight points throughout the game.
It was the first game of the season for the Knights, and it showed early on with the 2ndranked in 2A Lutheran Lions jumping out to a 17-10 lead at the end of the first quarter.  DSST shook off the first quarter jitters and scored 22 points in a fast paced second quarter with Junior guard Eisely Black leading the Knights with 10 points in the quarter. Even though the Knights were making a valiant charge in the second quarter, the Lions maintained a 35-32 lead behind the solid play of Sophomore guard Josh Clausen and Senior guard Taylor Murphy.
By the mid point of the 3rd quarter, the Lions had roared an eight point lead behind sophomore guard James Willis’s five points in a 30 second stretch and running their offense with mid-season form crispness.  However, the Knights made yet another charge at the lead when Junior guard Nathaniel Cox stole the ball and passed it to Senior guard Alexander Neal who then made a lay-up to tie the game.  The Knights took the lead 52-49 with Black hitting a three pointer with three seconds left in the 3rd quarter.
In the 4thquarter neither team was able to gain more than a three point advantage until the final minute.  The Lions gained the lead back quickly with a three-pointer from Willis at the 7:24 mark. The next four minutes the Lions were only able to score two points. While the Lions began to stall the Knights’ Cox, Neal got into gear. Cox was active causing a turnover that lead to Neal hitting the shot that gave the Knights the lead. The Knights would make 9 of 12 from the free throw line in the final two minutes to secure the victory. The Lions would make it interesting though. Sophomore Brendan Edgerley made a three pointer with 37.6 seconds left to bring Lutheran within two points, 66-64, but the Knights Black, Neal, and junior forward Dwight Pullen each made two free throws to seal the win.  Lutheran Coach Ryan Bredow said, “We can’t give up 40 points in the second half and expect to win.”
Lutheran was led in scoring by Willis and Murphy each scoring 16 points, while DSST was led by Black and Neal each scoring 22 points.
