2016 5A Playoff Outlook – Chauncey Billups Region

ThunderRidge is the number 1 seed in the Billups Region. The Grizzlies  are built to get back to Boulder for a second straight year. The Grizzlies solid guard play  with Brady, Hammonds and Seng, dominate forwards Verk and Mueller will be hard for a number the teams in this region to match up with when they are on top of their game. This could be the region of upsets though.

1st Round

Lincoln hosts Legacy on Wednesday. The Lancers are powered by juniors: guard Jamison Washington and forward Umar Jalloh. The Lancers like to get up and down the floor. The Lighting are lead by senior shooter Tyler Converse. If Lincoln plays at their tempo, it maybe  hard for the Lighting to keep up. Lincoln moves forward to play ThunderRidge.

Rampart and Loveland  will tip off on Wednesday in the Springs. The Rams of Rampart should be able to take this one from Loveland.

Aurora Central hosts Heritage Wednesday evening. The Trojans are led by seniors LaDarius Thomas and Elijah Coleman. They both,  are tough to guard and can score in bunches. Heritage beat Central last in year in the first round of the playoffs and will need to keep the Trojans out of the paint. Jack Peck will need to be dominate for Heritage.  Central moves on.

Greeley West could get pushed by Douglas County. Connor Thompson and Cordell Gillingham have to keep the Spartans from looking past the Huskies. Solomon Stark is the wildcard in this game. If he gets going early it will keep Douglas County close.  The more experienced Spartans win this one though.

2nd Round

ThunderRidge will get a good game from Lincoln. Size wise Lincoln matches up fairly well with the Grizzlies. This game comes down to guard play. If Brady can knock down open shots and Hammonds can get into the paint then the Grizzlies win. If Lincoln can push the pace and open up the lane for themselves then they have a real chance.  ThunderRidge’s depth though could win out.

Cherry Creek hosting Rampart on Saturday is a good match up. The Rams will play their 1-3-1 zone and force the Bruins to shoot the ball. Both Will Halfon and Hayden Parr can do just that.

Chatfield versus Aurora Central could be a fun game to watch. The Chargers like to get up and down the floor and so do the Trojans. The Chargers are lead in scoring by Cameron Pearson but on any given night any Charger can put up points.  Senior guard Riley Welch keeps the Chargers going and is an excellent set up man that can knock down shots. Senior Josh Ferentte will be key in this game. He can dominate the paint and finish well around the rim.  For the Trojans to pull off the upset they will need both Coleman and Thomas to be scoring, get someone else into double figures, and limit the Chargers second chances.

Greeley West at George Washington. The Spartans don’t match up very well with the speed and height of the Patriots. The Fugett brothers are a hard combo to guard, then throw in talented bucket getter Jervay Green and the best sophomore in the state Daylen Kountz and you have a hard night on your hands. For the Spartans they will need to keep the Patriots out of the paint and own the boards to keep it close.

Sweet 16

ThunderRidge will have a tough game against Cherry Creek. Parr can match up with Verk, while Halfon can guard either one of the talented Grizzlies guards. The key for Bruins in this game though will be Ammon Johnson and how well he can defend. ThunderRidge will need to keep the ball moving and not stand and watch Verk go against Parr.

George Washington and Chatfield is a rematch of the Chargers first game of the season when the Chargers outlasted the Patriots in a 88-83 barn burner. The key for the Patriots will be to share the ball and limit turnovers. Chatfield will need to knock down threes themselves and own the paint.

Great 8

ThunderRidge and George Washington is an upset watch game. The Grizzlies tend to struggle with ultra fast and athletic guards like the Patriots. The key for Patriots though will be the play of sophomore forward Tre Pierce. While not as thick as ThunderRidge forwards he can alter shots and has gotten much better as the season has moved long. The key in this game for ThunderRidge in this game will be Austin Mueller. The senior forward has to take full advantage of the mismatches he will see on offense and be a force on defense.  George moves on with a buzzer beater.
